A Palestinian student was expelled from a Florida high school after his mother made pro-Palestinian posts on social media in support of the Gaza Strip, which has been under Israeli systematic aggression since last October 7.
Jad Abu Hamada, 15, was expelled on November 19 from the Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, over pro-Palestinian content his mother, Dr. Maha Almasri, posted on social media criticizing Israel’s brutality against Palestinian civilians in Gaza.
The school issued a statement saying they considered Almasri’s social media posts to be “hateful and incendiary,” which Almasri has denied, saying her posts were referring to the mounting humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Jad, who is in 10th grade, has been unable to attend classes since November 19. The expulsion has interrupted his studies and college preparation, his mother told CNN, adding they now have to find a new school.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations has requested the US Department of Education investigate the expulsion of Abu Hamada.
During the past weeks, the United States witnessed protests in solidarity with Gaza demanding a ceasefire.
Dozens of members of US President Joe Biden’s Office went outside of the White House to join the humanitarian activism. They held a protest calling on the US officials to stop supporting Israel and to listen to the voices calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Late November, three students of Palestinian origin were subjected to an armed attack in the US state of Vermont, in an incident related to the solidarity of Palestinians abroad with the people of the Gaza Strip.
This was preceded by a hate crime carried out by an fanatic man, from the state of Illinois, who stabbed a Palestinian child 26 times on October 16, and injured his mother while chanting anti-Palestinian phrases, amid a wave of hatred and hostility led by US President Joe Biden who fully supports Israel in its aggression on Gaza.
