Ministry of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs along with Women Affairs Ministry organized on Tuesday a solidarity sit-in with Palestinian female captives in Israeli jails on the International Women’s Day which coincides on March 08.
Many citizens took part in the event. Participants included dozens of women including ex-detainees the most prominent being Fatimah al-Zeq along with representatives of both ministries as well as Palestinian factions in addition to families of prisoners and ex-detainees.
The undersecretary of the Ministry of Prisoners Bahauddin al-Madhoun said that the number of female captives in Israeli jails jumped to 56. They suffer from harsh and bad detention and health conditions in the Sharon and Damon Israeli jails he added.
Madhoun pointed out that female detainees are subjected to solitary confinement arbitrary transfers and deprivation of family visitation. They also complain of crowded rooms shortage of clothes and blankets as well as the deprivation of seeing their children he highlighted.
Madhoun also said that Palestinian female detainees include 12 minors under 18 years of age. He added that the oldest-serving prisoner is Lina al-Jarbouni who has been detained since 2002 and added that there are two captives held under the illegal administrative detention with no charge or trial.
Amira Haron undersecretary for the Ministry of Women’s Affairs called for making use of international conventions and laws for the interest of the Palestinian female captives and holding concerned authorities responsible for the fate of those imprisoned women.
