Hamas Islamic Jihad delegations head to Cairo

Saturday 29-September-2018

Two delegations representing Hamas and the Islamic Jihad left the Gaza Strip on Saturday heading to Cairo to resume Palestinian reconciliation talks.

According to Egyptian sources another delegation from Hamas movement abroad led by Saleh al-Arouri is scheduled to arrive in Egypt on Sunday.

Cairo in August hosted a series of meetings between Fatah and Hamas movements discussing the reconciliation the reconstruction of Gaza and the ceasefire with Israel.

A political division has been witnessed in the Palestinian territories since mid-June 2007 following Hamas’s takeover of the Gaza Strip after it won the parliamentary elections. The West Bank on the other side remained under the control of Fatah movement led by the Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas.

The most recent reconciliation agreement between Hamas and Fatah was signed on 12th October 2017 in Egypt but it failed after disagreements surfaced over several issues such as the empowerment of the Palestinian Authority government and the fate of Gaza employees who were appointed by Hamas after 2007.
