Fires break out in Eshkol due to incendiary balloons

Monday 2-July-2018

Fires broke out on Monday in several locations in the Eshkol settlement council following incendiary balloons allegedly flown from the Gaza Strip into Israeli-occupied territory.

Firefighting crews have reportedly been working at the scene to rein in the fires Ynet News reported.

On Sunday 45 fires broke out at Israeli settlements near the Gaza border as a result of incendiary balloons and kites flown from Gaza.

Facing a wave of airborne incendiary attacks from the Gaza Strip Israel has deployed a sky spotter that can detect fire-starting balloons and kites in the sky track their progress and then direct firefighters to their landing spots enabling them to more rapidly extinguish the flames and reduce damage.

Since March 30 Palestinian anti-occupation protesters in the blockaded Gaza Strip have launched hundreds of kites and helium balloons bearing flammable materials sparking near-daily fires that have burned thousands of acres of land in southern Israel.
