Gaza’s shopping cave . . . when necessity gives birth to invention

Sunday 6-May-2018

“When the need for a living becomes a matter of life or death one is forced to find ways to attain it by all means possible” Gazans living in the poverty-stricken coastal enclave typically respond when asked about possible ways to feed their families.

Struggling to earn a living in a community struck by unemployment like no other community in the world is a young Palestinian lady has embarked on a so-called “shopping cave” project.

Being the first of its kind in the enclave the shop takes the shape of a maze having artifacts pasted along its labyrinthine walls.

The showroom is characterized by a combination of antiquity and modernity with a mosaic of items that match different preferences and needs.

The cave project is another attempt to supply Gazans with needed goods at the lowest price possible in an area blockaded by the Israeli occupation from land air and sea for a decade’s time.
