In view of the deliberate medical negligence practiced by the Israel Prison Service (IPS) against the Palestinian prisoners the health conditions of nine injured female prisoners get worse day by day especially as international organizations like the International Committee of the Red Cross are prevented from intervening to provide treatment for them.
Some of those detainees who were arrested while injured by the Israeli occupation forces’ (IOF) gunfire need urgent surgeries according to the Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Commission.
Tragic cases
The 17-year-old Lama al-Bakri held in Hasharon jail was shot three times in her legs by the IOF soldiers during her arrest. Lama is not able to move and she needs an urgent surgery in addition to continuous treatment.
Abla al-Adam 46 a mother of nine was arrested while injured in the head face and shoulder. She later lost sight in her right eye due to the lack of treatment.
Shurouq Dwayyat 20 faces the risk of living with arm paralysis forever. Before she was arrested the IOF shot Dwayyat in the shoulder causing a great damage to the major artery. She has not received any treatment yet.
Jihan Hashima’s condition is no better. The 38-year-old detainee was arrested after being shot several times in the left foot. Hashima can barely move as a result of being denied decent medical care.
Amal Taqatqa 24 was arrested after being shot in the thigh chest and waist. An Israeli female soldier severely beat her in the chest with the rifle butt while she was bleeding causing several fractures in the rib cage. Amal is also in need for urgent surgery but the administration of the Ramla prison hospital keeps delaying her treatment.
The 18-year-old detainee Marah Bakir was shot 13 times in the left arm and some of the bullets have not been removed from her body yet while Nourhan Awwad who is the same age as Marah is suffering from several live bullet wounds in the left thigh and abdomen which she sustained at the time of her arrest.
Hilwa Hamamra 26 a mother of a girl child was arrested while having serious injuries that led to the removal of parts of her liver pancreas spleen and intestine.
The story of Israa Ja’abis 32 is even more tragic. She was severely burned particularly in her face chest and hands after the IOF opened fire at her car causing an explosion. Israa a mother too is suffering both psychologically and physically due to the IPS ill treatment and medical negligence.
Revenge-driven negligence
Director of the Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Commission Isa Qaraqe affirmed that this policy of medical negligence pursued against the injured female prisoners comes in retaliation to their resistance of the Israeli occupation.
Qaraqe stressed that Israel by pursuing such policy violates the Fourth Geneva Convention especially the convention on the treatment of war prisoners.
In an interview with the PIC Qaraqe said that his Commission had agreed with Doctors Without Borders Organization to send doctors to treat the female prisoners held in Israeli jails but the IPS did not allow that.
For his part the leader of the National Initiative party Mustafa Barghouti said that the IPS is committing a “holocaust” against the injured female prisoners.
Barghouti told the PIC reporter that efforts are underway to file an official complaint with the International Criminal Court against the IPS and Israel’s Ministry of Public Security because of the deliberate medical negligence and other racist practices waged against the Palestinian prisoners.
