The Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Commission on Sunday said that the Palestinians locked up in Israel’s Etzion jail have been suffering from unbearable imprisonment conditions particularly because of the meals provided by the Israel Prison Service for their daily Ramadan iftar.
According to the commission’s lawyer who visited the detainees two days ago instead of fasting only from sunrise to sunset every day during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan the prisoners are compelled to fast for many consecutive days without a break because of the extremely bad meals in terms of quality and quantity which has forced many of the prisoners to refuse to receive them.
The lawyer explained that the Israel Prison Service sometimes provides the prisoners with badly-cooked food such as rotten boiled eggs that are cooked a long time before being served to the prisoners in addition to hot and unclean water.
The commission added that the Israel Prison Service further refuses to provide fans in detention centers and desert prisons to relieve the prisoners of the extremely hot weather during the summer.
It called on international human rights organizations to intervene to put an end to Israel’s ill-treatment of the Palestinian political prisoners and to allow them access to good food and cold water especially during Ramadan and the current unbearable weather conditions.
