Sunday 10-March-2019

The Hamas Movement on Saturday said it had informed Hanna Naser head of the Palestinian Central Elections Commission that it would accept the holding of presidential and legislative elections if they were supervised by a national unity government.

Hamas spokesman Abdul-Latif Qanoua told Anadolu news agency that the leadership of his Movement told Naser during his recent visit to Gaza that the elections for the presidency and the legislative council should be held under the supervision of a national unity government while the elections for the National Council would be agreed upon later.

Qanoua also reiterated his Movement’s readiness to implement the reconciliation agreement it had signed with Fatah in 2011 and to be open to all solutions that would serve the Palestinian people.

He pointed that his Hams was waiting for a response from Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas to its position on the elections which it had conveyed through the head of the Elections Commission.

On Thursday chairman of Hamas’s political bureau Ismail Haneyya met with a delegation from the Elections Commission led by Hanna Naser in Gaza City.

The delegation arrived in Gaza on Wednesday on a two-day visit to discuss the possibility of holding legislative elections in the Palestinian arena.
