Palestinian prisoners enter day 15 of their protest steps

Tuesday 28-February-2023

The Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails entered on Tuesday day 15 of their disobedience steps which they staged in protest at the arbitrary punitive measures that were taken against them recently at the behest of far-right security minister Itamar Ben Gvir.

As part of their escalating protest program the prisoners decided today to close all the sections in their jails for several hours obstruct the routine security checks they go through and wear the brown prison uniform.

The prisoners also intend to stage a mass open-ended hunger strike on the first day of the holy month of Ramadan as a last step aimed at pressuring the Israeli prison service to backtrack on the measures that were taken against them.

Recently the prisoners launched disobedience steps after Ben Gvir started to give orders that deprived them of their rights including the closure of bakeries inside the prisons and limiting the shower time for each inmate to four minutes. In addition the prisoners are protesting against the transfer of hundreds of their mates to other prisons.

In a related development a state of high tension with the prisoners took place in Negev jail on Tuesday after Ben Gvir ordered new restrictions to be imposed on them.

According to Palestinian organizations defending prisoners’ rights Ben Gvir gave orders to prevent many families from visiting their relatives in Negev jail with no justification given and to deprive the prisoners of obtaining clothes from their visitors.
