Jordanian outrage over Israeli PM’s remarks on Al-Aqsa

Monday 16-May-2022

The Islamic Movement in Jordan strongly denounced the Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s statements rejecting outside interference in the management of the affairs of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The statements were seen as a denial of the 1994 Jordanian-Israeli peace treaty that gave Jordan a role in managing and supervising Islamic and Christian sanctities in Jerusalem.

The Islamic Action Front condemned Bennett’s statement as a coup against the Jordanian historic role in al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem calling for a firm official position against the statements.

The head of the Parliamentary Reform Bloc Saleh al-Armouti condemned Bennett’s statement as a “declaration of war” on Jordan.

This is a dangerous precedent that threatens global peace and security he added.

Minister of Awqaf Islamic Affairs and Holy Places Mohamed al-Khalayleh reiterated that the Hashemite Kingdom is the custodian of Al-Aqsa Mosque and all the Islamic religious endowments in Occupied Jerusalem.

He further confirmed that the Jordanian Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) in coordination with the Endowments Department in Jerusalem is responsible for appointing the guards of al-Aqsa Mosque.

Earlier last week Bennett said that “decisions regarding al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem will be taken by the Israeli government.”

His statements violate the Israeli-Jordanian peace treaty which states that Jordan would retain its unique role in the mosque complex.
