An Israeli court on Sunday sentenced Palestinian prisonerLayan Kayed a 23-year-old young girl from Sebastia town in Nablusto 16 months in jail and ordered her to pay a 6000 shekel fine.
In early June 2020 Israeli soldiers intercepted andkidnaped Kayed at Zaatara checkpoint as she was driving her car to BirzeitUniversity in northern Ramallah to receive her graduation documents from thefaculty of arts.
After detaining her for several hours and informing hermother about her detention she was taken to a transit detention center (Hasharonprison) where she was locked up in extremely harsh incarceration conditionsfor two weeks.
During her presence in there Israeli jailers repeatedly transferredher in chains to Ofer jail where she was exposed every time to long hours of interrogationbefore taking her back again to Hasharon prison.
Israeli interrogators in Ofer jail grilled her about her participationin student and union activities at the university — which they deemed asthreatening to Israel’s security — and later after all the questioning sessionswith her came to an end Kayed was transferred to Damon jail.
On June 18 2020 the Israeli occupation authority accusedher of throwing stones at Israeli forces and organizing social and culturalevents that posed a threat to Israel’s security.
