The Israeli prison service’s (IPS) parole committee refused on Wednesday to consider a request filed for the early release of Palestinian prisoner Walid Daqqa who suffers from cancer and other serious health issues.
The request was filed by the prisoner’s lawyer after he suffered serious health complications recently and was admitted to an intensive care unit at Assaf Harofeh Hospital in Tel Aviv.
According to the prisoner’s family the parole committee claimed that the early release of Daqqa was not within its powers so it referred his file to another committee responsible for the release of prisoners with life sentences.
During a court session for the Parole Committee held in Ramla prison a horde of extremist Jewish settlers reportedly assaulted prisoner Daqqa’s family and other Palestinian activists as they gathered outside the jail.
