Hamas slams PA for stopping UN vote against Israeli settlement

Monday 20-February-2023

The Hamas Movement has strongly denounced the Palestinian Authority (PA) leadership for complying with the US request that asked it to withdraw the submission of a draft resolution against Israel’s settlement activity at the UN Security Council.

In press remarks on Sunday Hamas spokesman Hazem Qasem described such a PA step as a “departure from the Palestinian national consensus.”

“It seems that the PA insists on buying illusions from the US administrations and the occupation governments and such behavior does not reflect the Palestinian people’s position” spokesman Qasem said.

“This PA behavior would provide a free service to the occupation state and contribute to embellishing its ugly image in the eyes of the world and encouraging the disgraceful normalization of ties [with Israel]” the spokesman added.

He stressed that the Palestinian people would uphold their struggle against the Israeli occupation until its removal from every inch of their land.

At the request of the PA the United Arab Emirates told the Security Council on Sunday that it would not call a vote on a draft resolution demanding that Israel “immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory.”

In a related context the Hebrew media revealed that there was a recent US-sponsored agreement between the PA and the Israeli government to de-escalate the tension and resume security coordination against the Palestinian resistance in the West Bank.

Walla news website quoted an unnamed Israeli official as saying that the US administration pressured the PA and Israel to suspend unilateral measures for a few months and resume security coordination in order to avoid further escalation during the holy month of Ramadan and the Jewish Passover.
