Despite a previous pledge to release him from administrative detention after he staged 172 days of hunger strike an Israeli court sentenced on Wednesday prisoner Khalil Awawdeh to 16 months in jail.
According to the Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS) Awawdeh was also given an eight-month suspended prison sentence and fined 5000 shekels ($1400) after he was accused of using a mobile phone during his administrative detention.
Awawdeh was supposed to be released on October 2 2022 after Israeli jailers pledged not to extend his administrative detention if he ended his hunger strike.
However days before his release he was charged with smuggling into Ramla prison a mobile phone he had with him when he was at an Israeli hospital receiving treatment as a result of his prolonged hunger strike.
