The Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs has accused the administration of Ofer prison of ignoring the health condition of prisoner Zuhair Abu Maizar 63.
Prisoner Abu Maizar has been in detention for about four and a half month awaiting trial on June 10.
The Commission who recently sent its lawyer Yousef Matia to visit prisoner Abu Maizar in Ofer jail said that he suffers from high blood sugar and heart problems and was regularly taking special medication for the retina before his arrest.
The Commission added that the Ofer administration only gives the prisoner blood thinner pills and ignores his need for his diabetes and retinal medicines pointing out that he had undergone open heart surgery three years ago so he needs special health care.
The Israeli prosecution authority claims that prisoner Abu Maizar was found in possession of a firearm when he was arrested while he rejects such an accusation against him as fabricated.
The Commission has held the Israeli prison service fully responsible for any harm coming to prisoner Abu Maizar calling on human rights groups to intervene to have him released because of his old age and his health suffering.
