The Israeli occupation authorities admitted on Thursday the killing of prisoner Thayer Abu Assab, 38, from the northern West Bank city of Qalqilya, last month, after jailers brutally beat him to death.

Israeli Channel 12 TV announced the involvement of 19 prison guards affiliated with the Israel Prison Services (IPS) in the severe beating of Palestinian prisoner Abu Assab that led to his death.

It said that Abu Assab, whose death was declared on November 18, underwent an autopsy that confirmed that he had been assaulted and beaten, which caused his death.

The Channel reported that all 19 jailers involved in the assault have been released under “restrictive conditions” until the investigation ends.

The Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, expressed his support for the prison guards, claiming they are innocent until proven otherwise, and that he is against charging anyone of them in the killing of Abu Assab, stressing the necessity to carry out an in-depth investigation.

The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners Society had previously accused the IPS of killing Abu Assab and carrying out systematic and premeditated assassinations of prisoners.

The freed prisoner Omar Al-Atshan, who was released from the Negev prison as part of the third batch of the prisoner exchange deal between the Palestinian resistance and Israel, revealed at his release that prisoner Abu Assab was subjected to relentless assault to death because he asked about the truce.

He died on the floor as jailors refused to allow a doctor to see him immediately, Al-Atshan said.
