The Government Media Office (GMO) has described the relief efforts made to alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, especially in the north, as “weak and below the required minimum.”

According to GMO, an aid-laden ship has put to sea from the Cypriot port of Larnaca en route to Gaza. However, this ship’s load, which will be searched by the Israeli occupation army, does not exceed the cargo of one or two trucks.

The boat’s journey will take several days, while it is not yet known where it will dock and how the aid onboard will be delivered to Gazans.

In a statement on Wednesday, GMO head Salama Maarouf stressed the need for putting pressure on the Israeli regime to allow aid convoys into Gaza through land crossings such as Rafah and Karam Abu Salem.

Maarouf appealed to the international community to pool their efforts, before it is too late, to save those who are starving through pressuring for the entry of thousands of aid trucks that are lined up on the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing.

Israel’s bombardment and siege since October 7 has drastically diminished vital supplies in Gaza, leaving the entire population of some 2.2 million exposed to high levels of acute food insecurity or worse, according to the Integrated Food Security and Nutrition Phase Classification (IPC).

Recently, UN human rights experts have warned that “Israel is destroying Gaza’s food system and using food as a weapon against the Palestinian people.”
