European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Sunday, “Gaza is facing famine, and we cannot accept this,” calling for a rapid ceasefire agreement.

Speaking at the Egyptian-European Six-Party Summit in Cairo, the EU official expressed the European Union’s concerns about the repercussions of Israel launching a military operation in Rafah.

“It is critical to achieve an agreement on a ceasefire rapidly now that frees the hostages and allows more humanitarian aid to reach Gaza,” she said.

Von der Leyen pledged to work side by side with Egypt and other partners to direct aid to Gaza through all possible ways, pointing out that Egypt is the pillar of stability and security in the Middle East.

She stressed the need to protect civilians, and to ensure no more forced displacement of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, saying, “we want to work for lasting peace based on the principle of the two-state solution.”

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been launching a brutal aggression against the Gaza Strip, leaving tens of thousands of martyrs among civilians, most of them children and women, in addition to an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe and massive destruction of infrastructure.
