The municipality of Gaza has initiated a partial waste collection campaign in some areas and streets to mitigate the health and environmental crisis faced by the city. This initiative is carried out in collaboration with the Australian Charities Agency and the neighborhood committees in the city.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the municipality announced that the campaign, which will last for approximately 30 days, aims to collect 30,000 tons of waste with the support of the agency, as well as 10,000 tons in cooperation with the neighborhood committees. The collection efforts will focus on the areas with the highest waste accumulation and population density.

Approximately 100,000 tons of waste have accumulated in the city streets due to the depletion of fuel necessary for waste collection and disposal services. Furthermore, the Israeli occupation army destroyed around 125 vehicles, including heavy machinery used for waste collection.

The municipality pointed out that the Israeli occupation army prevents its crews from accessing the waste dump in the Jabalia area, east of the city.

In a previous statement, the municipality of Gaza mentioned that the recent rise in temperature has exacerbated the health and environmental conditions in the city. This is due to the accumulation of large quantities of waste in the streets, severe water shortages, sewage leakage into the streets, as well as the destruction of roads, infrastructure, and service facilities, including the uprooting of thousands of trees.

The statement further highlighted that around 100,000 tons of waste are piling up in the streets, and with the rising temperatures, the waste decomposition process accelerates, leading to the spread of foul odors, insects, and harmful rodents. This exacerbates the health and environmental disaster in the city and contributes to the spread of diseases.
