On the 21st anniversary of the martyrdom of the Movement’s founder, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, Hamas affirmed its adherence to his path, “believing in the role of our Arab and Islamic nation in defending Palestine, Jerusalem and the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.”
Hamas said in a statement on Saturday that the twenty-first anniversary of the Israeli assassination of Sheikh Yassin falls today, adding that the Palestinian people and their resistance are inspired by him to adhere to rights, steadfastness, patience, and defense of the land and sanctities.
Hamas emphasized that the assassination of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and the assassination of the leaders of the Palestinian people and their national figures did not and will not break the will and the steadfastness of the Palestinians and the valor and strength of their resistance, nor will it succeed in achieving Israel’s aggressive goals of displacement and obliteration of the Palestinian cause.
Hamas stressed that the Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people and the assassination of their leaders will only increase their determination and adherence to rights, constants and resistance as a strategic option to wrest national rights, liberate the land and return to it.
It pointed out that what was planted by Sheikh Yassin has borne fruit today with legendary steadfastness in all stages of struggle and resistance against the Israeli occupation, not the least of which was the Al-Aqsa flood battle, which was a pioneering model of patience, sacrifice, and steadfastness in modern history.
Hamas said that the assassination and targeting of Palestinian leaders and national symbols will not succeed in dissuading the people from continuing their legitimate struggle in defense of their land, constants and holy sites.
On March 22, 2004, the Israeli occupation army assassinated Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, 67, when he was returning home after he had performed the dawn prayer. An Israeli helicopter gunship fired several missiles directly at the Sheikh and those who were accompanying him.
