Yemen’s armed forces said on Friday it had launched a “hypersonic ballistic missile” targeting Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport, hours after the Israeli military reported intercepting a missile fired from Yemen.
“The enemy’s defense systems failed to intercept our missile,” military spokesperson Yehya Sariee said, affirming the attack shut down airport operations for over an hour and forced “millions” of Israelis into shelters.
Spokesman Sariee said the missile strike was part of an intensifying campaign to impose an aerial blockade on the Israeli occupation state in retaliation for its “war crimes” in the Gaza Strip.
He urged anew international airlines to suspend flights to Israel and warned that Israeli ships in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea would remain within missile range.
The Israeli military confirmed that its defense systems had been activated and intercepted a projectile over central Israel. Sirens were heard across the Tel Aviv area, sending residents scrambling for shelter.
An Israeli security source cited by The Times of Israel claimed the missile was downed by Israel’s Arrow long-range missile defense system. The source also reported that a US-supplied THAAD interceptor was deployed but failed to hit its target, the second reported THAAD failure this week.
