The Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday said that Jerusalem is being subjected to a fierce attack aimed at changing its spiritual identity and historical character and harming its Islamic and Christian holy sites.
Addressing the 30th summit of the African Union in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa he expressed his appreciation for the African Union countries’ incessant support of the Palestinian cause which was clearly manifested in the recent UN vote on Jerusalem.
Abbas stressed that the US president Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel “made the US a biased side toward Israel”. He continued that the US had disqualified itself as a mediator for the peace process asserting that it would never be able to propose an equitable solution to achieve peace in the Middle East.
Abbas said that the struggle against colonialism racism and injustice for the sake of defending people’s right to self-determination is a common issue between Palestine and the peoples of the African continent. “We count on your steadfast position on the Palestinian cause” he added.
