Abbas: Israel’s government undermines the two-state solution

Thursday 30-March-2017

Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas has accused the Israeli government of undermining the principle of the two-state solution and creating an apartheid system based on one state.

“The occupation government has been working since 2009 on undermining the two-state solution through accelerating the pace of settlement expansion and the appropriation of Palestinian lands” Abbas said during a speech at the Arab Summit in Jordan on Wednesday.

He also said that “Israel would get respect from its neighbors and enjoy the fruits of peace according to the Arab peace initiative if it ended its occupation and renounced its belief that it could provide security for itself through more land grabs.”

The president emphasized that the two-state solution based on the 1967 borders remains the only way to achieve peace adding any talk about temporary solutions to the Palestinian question or any attempt to integrate it within a regional framework would not serve peace and justice.

He warned of turning the current political conflict into a religious strife saying this would endanger the entire region.

He reiterated his authority’s readiness to deal positively with all international initiatives and efforts aimed at resolving the Palestinian issue.
