Abbas Trump explore avenues of peace in Washington

Thursday 4-May-2017

US president Donald Trump on Wednesday evening met for 25 minutes with Palestinian Authority (PA) chief Mahmoud Abbas at the White House in the US capital city of Washington.

In a joint news conference Abbas said he looked forward to working with Trump to reach a historic peace treaty based on the two-state principle expressing confidence in the US administration’s ability to achieve that.

For his part Trump asked Abbas to continue his security collaboration with Israel and work on combatting what he described as terrorism.

The US president also hailed Abbas for working for long years with Israeli leaders on achieving peace and pledged to do whatever he could to broker a peace deal between the Palestinians and Israelis.

However he affirmed that the US could not impose any peace agreement on Israel.

“The Palestinians and Israelis must work together to reach an agreement that allows both peoples to live worship and thrive and prosper in peace” he said.
