Abbas threatens to wage new sanctions against Gaza

Monday 9-April-2018

The Palestinian Authority (PA) president Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday threatened to impose new sanctions on the Gaza Strip if the PA government is not handed over all public institutions in the enclave.

The PA will no longer be responsible for what happens in the Gaza Strip if Hamas refuses to hand over full control of the coastal enclave to the PA government Abbas said.

Speaking at the opening of Fatah’s Central Committee meeting in Ramallah on Sunday Abbas said that this was the message he delivered to the Egyptian delegation he met a few days ago.

“We talked to them at length” Abbas said “We told them we must be given everything: all institutions and ministries including security and weapons.”

Abbas said that if Hamas refuses to comply “We will not be responsible for what happens there (Gaza). We are now waiting for a reply from Egypt and when it arrives we will talk and take action.”

He added that a National Council meeting will be convened soon in Ramallah despite the absence of national consensus about nine years after the last emergency session of the Council was held.

The PA president stressed that every possible effort will be made to convene the National Council to prove that it is the most important institution for the Palestinian national project.
