Awawdeh enters day 163 of his hunger strike

Monday 22-August-2022

Palestinian prisoner Khalil Awawdeh entered on Monday day 163 of the hunger strike he staged to protest his administrative detention amid growing concerns over his life.

Last Friday an Israeli court froze his administrative detention but Awawdeh said he would not stop his hunger strike until his jailers decide to release him.

The prisoner’s lawyer Ahlam Haddad affirmed at the time that Awawdeh would not suspend his hunger strike because he was asking for his release and not for a freeze on his administrative detention.

As a result of his prolonged hunger strike Awawdeh suffers from multiple health problems including severe joint pains a persistent headache emaciation extreme fatigue irregular heartbeats and breathing and blurred eyesight.

His wife Dalal Awawdeh recently described Awawdeh’s body as a “skeleton” and his health condition as “extremely critical” adding that he has difficulty speaking and memorizing and cannot move without a wheelchair.

Awawdeh a 40-year-old from Idhna town in al-Khalil decided to suspend 111 days of hunger strike on June 21 before he resumed it on July 2 after Israeli jailers reneged on their pledges to end his administrative detention.

Awawdeh a father of four was kidnaped in December 2021 and since then he has been held under administrative detention – a tool used by the Israeli occupation authority in order to jail Palestinians for several months without charge or trial and extend their detention indefinitely.
