Commission of Detainees: Abu Hamid may die any moment

Saturday 10-September-2022

The Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs has warned that cancer-stricken prisoner Nasser Abu Hamid may die at any moment holding the Israeli prison service (IPS) fully responsible for the deterioration of his health condition.

Spokesman for the Commission Hasan Abd Rabbo said that prisoner Abu Hamid had not received any dose of chemotherapy for two months because his body became so weak and was no longer able to respond to cancer drugs.

Last Thursday the Palestinian Prisoner Society said that a new medical report affirmed that Abu Hamid “is dying.”

For its part Wa’ed Society for Detainees and Ex-Detainees said that the administration of Assaf Harofeh Hospital disclaimed any medical responsibility for the life of Abu Hamid and recommended his release to spend his final days among his family.

Abu Hamid a 49-year-old from al-Am’ari refugee camp in Ramallah has been in jail since 2002 serving seven life sentences and an additional 50 years in prison. He has four brothers in jail who are also serving life sentences.

A few months ago the prisoner suffered from a life-threatening health problem in his lungs but the IPS delayed his transfer to the hospital and medically neglected his issue before deciding to take him to the hospital.

At the time the Commission of Detainees held the IPS fully responsible for the life of prisoner Abu Hamid and appealed to international organizations to intervene to have him released and put an end to his suffering.
