Death penalty imposed on two Gazans accused of drug trafficking

The military court in Gaza sentenced two Gazans convicted of drug trafficking to death on Sunday.

The spokesman of the Ministry of Interior Iyad al-Bozom told a press conference that there is a scheme aimed at destroying the Palestinian society and youths by smuggling narcotics into the Gaza Strip.

He pointed out that his ministry seeks to fortify the Palestinian society against the various dangers imposed by the Israeli occupation to weaken the internal structure of the society.

Bozom explained that the anti-drug police have stepped up their efforts in the recent months with the help of the security services to combat drug dealers. They managed to intercept large amounts of drugs that are worth over a million dollar and were intended to be distributed in the Gaza Strip in January 2017 he noted.

For his part Nasser Suleiman the head of the military judiciary in Gaza said that drugs are trafficked into Gaza through the border areas with Israel.

He added that there is a military specialized unit dedicated to investigate drug crimes and form a special court to issue verdicts.

The director general of the anti-drug unit Ahmad al-Qidra pointed out that the amount of drugs that was seized at the beginning of 2017 indicates the intensification of Israeli campaigns launched against the Palestinian society.

Qidra vowed to exert every effort possible to eradicate these poisons adding that sanctions are important to achieve deterrence and the verdicts issued against drug dealers are an essential part of this process.
