Detained MP calls for national unity shunning differences

Wednesday 10-January-2007

RAMALLAH (PIC)– Sheikh Hassan Yousef the detained Hamas MP has called on the Palestinian people to cement ranks shun violence and resolve differences through dialogue.

Sheikh Yousef who was attending a trial hearing in Ofer detention center on Tuesday said that all Palestinian factions should display greater sense of responsibility affirming that shedding Palestinian blood at Palestinian hands is a red line.

He said that all Palestinian parties should return to dialogue as the sole Palestinian means of understanding and to cut the way before those trying to ignite strife in the Palestinian arena.

The Israeli military court decided to extend detention of Sheikh Yousef 53 until 12th February 2007 to listen to the testimonies of more prosecution witnesses.

Family members of the MP said that the court listened to the testimonies of two Israelis including a policeman who charged the Sheikh with participating in Hamas-organized marches and delivering speeches in its name.

Members of the family said that Yousef who won the biggest number of votes in Ramallah and El-Bireh constituency in the parliamentary elections a year ago was enjoying high morale despite his bad incarceration conditions in the Negev desert prison and despite depriving him of family visits for a long period.

The MP was kidnapped on 259/9/2006 from his home at the hands of IOF troops in an Israeli campaign of arrests attempting to foil a possible Hamas’ victory in the elections. The campaign ended with the arrest of more than 400 Hamas cadres or supporters but failed in its goal.
