Dozens of prisoners infected with Coronavirus in Israeli jails

Monday 24-January-2022

Dozens of Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli prisons of Ofer and Eshel have tested positive for the Coronavirus according to human rights sources on Sunday.

The Palestinian prisoners club said that around one hundred Palestinian prisoners contracted the virus in Ofer (sections 17 and 22) while ten others were infected in the Eshel prison including Nael al-Barghouthi who has entered his 42nd year in Israeli jails.

The number of Palestinian prisoners infected with the COVID-19 has thus reached 526 since the beginning of the pandemic.

For its part Hamas Movement charged that the spread of the Coronavirus among Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails was the result of deliberate medical neglect.

Hazem Qassem a spokesman for Hamas said in a statement on Sunday night that the spread of the disease among the prisoners reveal the absence of any preventive measures or primary care for those prisoners.

He held the Israeli occupation fully responsible for the lives of the Palestinian prisoners and urged the Red Cross and human rights groups to provide whatever is necessary to protect those prisoners and prevent the spread of the pandemic.
