EU inaugurates seawater desalination plant in Gaza

GAZA (PIC)– Johannes Hahn the Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy Tuesday morning inaugurated a seawater desalination plant in Central Gaza.
In the opening speech in Deir al-Balah refugee camp Hahn announced the opening of the first phase of the plant which will benefit the inhabitants in central and southern Gaza.

Hahn who arrived to Gaza Tuesday morning on a few-hour-visit pointed out that the plant will provide the Strip with 6000 square meters of desalinated seawater daily.

He said that the EU funded the first stage of the plant which will be benefiting 75000 Palestinians with a value estimated at 10 million Euros.

He also declared that Europe is going to fund the second phase with the same value mid of June as part of its pledges to boost the plant production capacity.

95% of water in Gaza Strip is not suitable for human use due to the great damage to water and natural sources resulting from continuous years of disputes he said.
