Friday’s bird fair in Nablus attracts hundreds of Palestinian citizens

Saturday 3-March-2018

A bird fair organized recently every Friday by Palestinian bird breeders and traders at the eastern parking area in Nablus city has attracted hundreds of watchers and buyers and made the place full of life on that day which is considered a weekend according to the Islamic calendar.

Last Friday morning the parking area became full of cars and visitors who flocked to the place to see or buy birds whose owners were displaying them in special cages. Some unique and exotic birds were also auctioned on that day.

One of the beautiful birds was sold to the highest bidder for 1500 shekels according to one of the participants.

Pigeon keepers also had the chance to sell some of their birds to citizens who like to have their meat for lunch.

Some children also talked their fathers into buying birds especially pigeons.

Wasim Abdul-Fattah who is a bird and pigeon fancier said that the idea of organizing such outdoor bird show came from bird collectors and lovers who chose the parking space in central Nablus for their weekly event to make it easy for all citizens to flock from all nearby areas to the city center and have the opportunity to visit their bird fair.

Abdul-Fattah also said that the participants in this activity are mostly members of the Association of Birds which was founded in Nablus two months ago with the aim of promoting the cultural of raising and taking care of birds among the society in the West Bank.

The participants in the event expressed hope that their weekly bird fair would become popular after their initiative was circulated on the Internet and hailed widely by social media users expecting that other areas of the West Bank would follow suit and organize such bird-related gatherings.
