Gaza groups protest in solidarity with detainees in Israeli jails

Tuesday 22-January-2019

Islamic and national groups in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday staged a protest at the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

The Hamas leader Mushir al-Masri said that the Israel Prison Service’s attack on Palestinian detainees in Ofer prison is a “declaration of war” and “state terrorism”.

Al-Masri stressed the need for achieving national unity to confront this unprecedented attack. “If Israel declares war on the prisoners we will fight back” he said.

Member of the Prisoners Committee Atyya al-Basyouni announced that a series of events will be organized in the coming days in support of the prisoners.

Al-Basyouni held Israel responsible for the current escalation in Israeli jails and affirmed that Israel’s Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan will never be able to subdue the Palestinian prisoners and that the policy he is pursuing against them will fail.

He called on the Palestinian Authority to sue Israel at the International Criminal Court for the human rights violations committed against Palestinian prisoners in its jails.

For his part human rights activist Abdulnaser Farwana said that the silence with which the Ofer attack was met internationally is a crime.

Farwana called on human rights organizations to shoulder their moral humanitarian and legal responsibilities and act against Israel’s ongoing crimes in Ofer jail.
