Hamas: Local elections cannot see day before rift is over

Wednesday 25-January-2017

Hamas spokesman Hazim Qassem said Wednesday evening that in order for local elections to see the day the national rift should be healed once and for all.

According to Qassem holding local elections while Gaza and the West Bank are still politically torn apart is an infringement on the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC).

He added that no decision should be taken without national consensus and that elections should be held following the consent of all national factions.

The Hamas leader slammed the Palestinian Authority (PA) chaired by Mahmoud Abbas and Fatah Movement the PA’s major component for monopolizing the act of decision-making as regards national elections citing the recent amendments of the electoral law and the establishment of a PA-run court as instances of unilateral policy-making.

Hamas’s remarks were released just one day after a weekly session by the PA council of ministers in Ramallah culminated Tuesday in decisions to hold local elections and declared the government’s solid back up of the Central Elections Commission to hold the elections the soonest.
