Hamas condemns Mladenov’s UNSC speech

Friday 28-August-2020

Hamas on Friday condemned the UN coordinator of the peace process in the Middle East Nickolay Mladenov’s speech at the UN Security Council for replicating the Israeli version of events in Gaza Strip.

Member of the Movement’s International Relations Office Bassem Naim said: “We were surprised by the speech of Mr. Mladenov at the UNSC recently about the situation in the Palestinian territories in general and the Gaza Strip in particular as he tried to serves the narrative of the Israeli occupation and turned it from an aggressor to a victim ignoring facts that a person in his position cannot be ignorant of”.

Naim added in a press statement that the Gaza Strip is an occupied area according to international law and that Israel is the occupying power and it is responsible under international law for the lives of the civilian population in this area.

Naim explained that the reason for the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is the Israeli occupation that has continued for more than five decades and a suffocating blockade imposed by Israel for more than 14 years which has turned the Gaza Strip into a large prison and not because of the presence of Hamas which is elected by a large majority of the Palestinian people.

He added that all the forms of resistance exercised by the Palestinian people is a legitimate right guaranteed by international law and it came in response to the flagrant Israeli violations of international law which are represented in the occupation blockade and repeated attacks on Gaza.

Naim said “Our people and its leadership have made great efforts to contain the situation and avoid escalation and Mr. Mladenov was part of these efforts and it is the occupation that disavowed all its understandings and obligations.”

Naim called on the international community to immediately intervene to end this complex tragedy that the Gaza Strip is experiencing from the brutal occupation and suffocating siege and recently the deadly Corona pandemic.

He concluded by saying: “The tragic conditions in the Gaza Strip are unprecedented and threaten a complete collapse of all aspects of life”.
