The Islamic resistance movement Hamas condemned the “terrorist attack” targeting the Egyptian army east of the Suez Canal which killed and wounded a number of soldiers and officers.
In a statement on Saturday Hamas said “We declare our full solidarity with the sister Arab Republic of Egypt and express our sincere condolences and sympathy to the fraternal Egyptian people and the families of the martyrs and their relatives wishing speedy recovery for the wounded.”
Earlier the Egyptian army announced that an officer and 10 soldiers had been killed and 5 wounded in an armed attack east of the Suez Canal.
Egyptian army spokesman Ghraib Abdel Hafiz confirmed in a statement on Facebook that the army had foiled “a terrorist attack on a water lifting station in the eastern Canal region” adding that the armed confrontations resulted in the “killing of an officer 10 soldiers and the injury of 5 others.”
He added that army forces continued to pursue elements of the armed group and had surrounded them in one of Sinai’s isolated areas.
