Hamas cyber “catfishing” traps under full swing says Hebrew media

Friday 11-August-2017

Israeli soldiers have been duped by fake accounts as Hamas hackers try to extract secret data from social media according to Hebrew-speaking reports.

The Israeli 0404 news site said a renewed “catfishing” attack has been launched by Hamas hackers on Facebook to lure Israeli soldiers into online chats revealing their locations and movements.

Hamas hackers allegedly set up fake social media profiles and pose as attractive girls and fellow soldiers to trick the Israelis into friendly chats.

In a testimony released by 0404 site an Israeli soldier said a girl added him on Facebook and asked him about his location and post.

Last year the Israeli occupation army made complaints that Hamas had been using pictures of attractive women to hack phones belonging to Israeli soldiers and to connect with army officers mainly through Facebook. After sending the soldiers pictures they would suggest downloading a “video chat” app that was actually a Trojan Horse that allowed them access to the soldiers’ contacts and files GPS data photographs and text messages and allowed them to install additional applications on the devices.

Hamas was able to take photos of offices and computer screens and upload them to the cloud without the soldiers knowing.
