Hamas on Sunday mourned the death of the Yemeni scholar Mohamed Ali al-Muayed.
Hamas said in a statement that Sheikh al-Muayed paid a heavy price for his pro-Palestine position and had spent several years in US jails.
Hamas Movement extended its heartfelt condolences to the family and relatives of Sheikh al-Muayed.
Al-Muayed was pronounced dead at al-Nour Hospital in Makkah where he succumbed to life-threatening diseases.
He had been held for nearly six years in US prisons after he was arrested in Germany in 2003 on charges of supporting the Palestinian cause and Hamas resistance group.
Al-Muayad’s center south of the Yemeni capital city of Sanaa provides shelter and allowances to 3000 orphans and poor families.
