Hamas presses for escalated protests over anti-Jerusalem schemes

Thursday 21-December-2017

Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas called on the Palestinians to intensify protests across the occupied Palestinian territories in response to the U.S.-Israel schemes to alter the status quo in Occupied Jerusalem.

Speaking in a Wednesday statement Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum stressed the need to mobilize the entire nation to escalate efforts and solidarity campaigns so as to further isolate the Israeli occupation and thwart its sacrilegious schemes against Occupied Jerusalem.

According to Barhoum the establishment of a Jewish synagogue beneath Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa Mosque—Muslims’ third holiest site—is a flagrant violation of Muslims’ sovereignty over the site and another crime against the Palestinian people and its holy sites.

A Dec. 6 decision by the U.S. President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and start lengthy preparations to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city has sparked a tide of universal protests including in the occupied Palestinian territories and across metropolitan Arab and European capitals. The move has been criticized by most of the world’s states and prompted wide-spread solidarity with the Palestinians.
