Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas announced its refusal of the Palestinian government’s decision to hold local elections on May 13 describing it as null and void since it has been made without national consensus.
Hamas’s spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said in a statement on Tuesday that the decision enhances division and serves the policy of Fatah Movement at the expense of the Palestinian people’s interests and the unity of its institutions.
Barhoum stressed that any upcoming elections should boost reconciliation. It is unreasonable to carry out elections before ending the internal division he said.
Earlier on Tuesday the government announced in a brief statement its intention to conduct local elections in the West Bank as well as in the Gaza Strip on May 13.
