Hamas rejects new separatist government

Sunday 10-March-2019

Hamas on Sunday said that the Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas’s appointment of a new government without national consensus is “monopoly of power” and “evasion of the reconciliation agreements previously signed”.

Hamas’s spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said in a brief statement that the new government would further separate the West Bank from the Gaza Strip and entrench the internal division.

Barhoum stressed that his movement does not recognize the new separatist government since it was formed without national consensus.

He added that the best way to address the current Palestinian situation is through establishing a national unity government and holding general elections: presidential legislative and national council elections.

Abbas earlier on Sunday asked Mohammed Shtayyeh a member of Fatah’s Central Committee to form the new government.

The new government is seen as a move that would widen the rift between Hamas and Fatah which started in 2007. No reconciliation agreement has succeeded in bringing it to an end.
