Hamas welcomes UNSC resolution on settlement activities

Saturday 24-December-2016

The Hamas Movement has hailed the UN Security Council’s resolution on ending Israeli settlement construction in the occupied Palestinian territories as “a triumph for the Palestinian people.”

“The resolution is a victory for the Palestinian people and strengthens our people’s right to their entire land” Hamas spokesman Abdul-Latif al-Qanua told the Palestinian Information Center (PIC) on Friday evening.

Spokesman Qanua stressed the need to translate the resolution on Israel’s settlement construction into reality and work on pressuring Israel to respect the international law and end its occupation.

He expressed his Movement’s thanks to all countries that voted in favor of the resolution and supported the Palestinian people’s right to their land calling for more international supportive positions towards the Palestinian cause.

14 members of the UN Security Council on Friday voted in favor of a resolution demanding an immediate halt to Israel’s settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories with the US remarkably abstaining.

The resolution was put forward at the 15-member council for a vote by New Zealand Malaysia Venezuela and Senegal one day after Egypt delayed it and then withdrew it under pressure from Israel and US president-elect Donald Trump.
