Head of Hamas’s political bureau Ismail Haneyya has affirmed that his Movement is serious about the steps it has taken towards the national reconciliation and will do its best to turn it into a reality as a prelude to achieving the higher aspirations of the Palestinian people.
This came during his meeting on Monday with special coordinator for the Middle East peace process Nikolay Mladenov in the presence of senior Hamas officials.
“We are serious about the steps taken to achieve the reconciliation and we will continue to move forward to make it a reality because it is a high national interest and a springboard to table major political issues and the means to achieve the higher goals of the Palestinian people” Haneyya stated.
During the meeting the Hamas official briefed Mladenov on the talks with Egyptian officials that took place recently in Cairo which focused in particular on the bilateral relations between Gaza and Egypt and the inter-Palestinian division.
For his part Mladenov applauded the initiative taken by Hamas to achieve the national unity and expressed his keenness on contributing to the success of the reconciliation efforts.
He said that different international parties he met in New York welcomed the position of Hamas and its statement on the reconciliation.
The UN official also put the Hamas leadership in the picture of the talks which he held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly’s recent meetings with the parties concerned with the Palestinian cause.
The two sides also discussed the steps required for the success of the Palestinian reconciliation especially with regard to ending the measures that were taken by the Palestinian Authority lately against Gaza.
In this regard head of the Hamas Movement in Gaza Yahya al-Sinwar who attended the meeting affirmed that his Movement would provide all facilities to make the government’s upcoming visit to Gaza successful.
He stressed Hamas’s determination to restore the national unity and end the division pledging to do whatever it takes to achieve that.
