Haneyya: Palestinian unity urgently needed to confront US plan

Thursday 5-March-2020

Head of Hamas’s political bureau Ismail Haneyya has reiterated the importance of the Palestinian national unity as a “strategic option” affirming that there is a more urgent need to restore it in order to confront and frustrate the US deal of the century (pro-Israeli peace plan).

Addressing journalists in Moscow on Wednesday Haneyya said his Movement welcomes and ready for a meeting with Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas warning that the absence of a national consensus encourages the Israelis to escalate their crimes against the Palestinian people and their land.

He denounced the US administration for working on depriving the Palestinian people of their right to independence and self-determination and for showing an absolute bias in favor of the Israeli occupation state and its policies.

The Hamas official also slammed the US administration’s deal of the century as a “great danger threatening the Palestinian cause” and a “disregard for international resolutions and the Arab initiative.”

He hailed the Russian leadership for showing a real willingness to help the Palestinians to overcome division and restore unity.

“We have a reservoir we can use to achieve the Palestinian reconciliation such as the prisoners’ document in 2006 the 2011 Cairo agreement the 2014 Shati agreement and the 2017 agreement in Cairo and Beirut” he said.

“Such agreements represent a road map to reconciliation and there is no need for new ones” he added.

With regard to his visit to Moscow the Hamas political chief explained that the visit was aimed at boosting the relations between his Movement and Russia especially in light of the latter’s supportive positions on the Palestinian rights.

He said that he and his accompanying delegation explored avenues to promote the Russian relations with Hamas as a “legitimate resistance movement that won elections democratically.”

Haneyya also noted that the Hamas delegation highlighted the tragic humanitarian situation in the besieged Gaza Strip during its meetings with Russian officials and asked them to adopt a package of projects and provide aid to help alleviate the population’s suffering.
