Israeli authorities release hunger striking Jerusalemite prisoner

Monday 22-May-2017

The Shatta prison administration released on Monday the hunger striking Jerusalemite prisoner Ali Zawahra 22 from Sur Baher town after he served seven months and a half in Israeli jails.

The head of the committee of Jerusalemite prisoners’ families Amjad Abu Asab said that Zawahra joined the open hunger strike on 17th April 2017 and was subjected to maltreatment and isolation many times.

Abu Asab along with the member of the committee Alaa Haddad and a group of prisoners’ families visited Zawahra at al-Makassed Hospital to check on his health and to inquire about the conditions of the hunger strikers.

Abu Asab explained that Zawahra is suffering from pains in the stomach and the rib cage and that he cannot walk without the help of others adding that the doctors have conducted the necessary medical examinations and decided that he should stay in the hospital.

He pointed out that Zawahra affirmed that the prisoners who have been on hunger strike for 35 days are facing difficult conditions yet Zawahra said they are still steadfast and all they need is a greater popular support in order to shorten the duration of the hunger strike.

Zawahra was arrested on 8th July 2016 and charged with incitement through Facebook by the Israeli Public Prosecution. He spent 35 days in detention before being transferred to house arrest for three months and a half then turned himself in on 4th December 2016 to serve his sentence.

On the other hand the Magistrates Court extended on Sunday the detention of two Jerusalemites until Monday and Wednesday and released the two youths Ahmad Mahmoud and Waseem Obaid from al-Issawiya town on a personal bail.
