A big number of Israeli prison guards raided Palestinian prisoners’ cells in the Nafha desert prison on Monday night and conducted thorough searches amid rising tensions.
The spokesman for the Asra Media Office Akram Abu Sharkh said in a press release on Tuesday that the raid on section 10 of the jail followed an attack by a Palestinian prisoner on two jailers. The prisoner was held in a cell not fit for humans with no covers or proper clothes in the current prevailing winter conditions after beating him up Abu Sharkh added.
He pointed out that the prison administration had isolated the section from other prison sections holding it responsible for any harm done to the prisoners.
The Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS) had earlier Monday warned of a massive crackdown against Palestinian prisoners held in the Israeli Nafha prison after a prisoner attacked two Israeli prison staff members.
More forces were deployed in the prison following the alleged attack the PPS pointed out saying that the prison administration has cut off water and electricity to the facility.
The rights center said the incident came as tension has been running high in the Nafha prison due to the Israeli collective punishment measures.
Israeli media sources have earlier claimed that two prison staff members were attacked by a Palestinian prisoner.
The two staff members were checked at the prison clinic and did not need to be transferred for further care the sources added.
The Palestinian Captive Movement has earlier warned of an escalation due to the mistreatment by the Israel Prison Service (IPS).
The prisoners have threatened to take escalatory steps including hunger strikes within the prisons until their demands are met.
