Israeli prosecution to extend detention of hunger striker Qawasmeh

Thursday 4-November-2021

The Israeli military prosecution office has informed the lawyer of the Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS) of its intent to extend the administrative detention of prisoner Miqdad al-Qawasmeh who has been on hunger strike for 106 days.

In a statement on Thursday PPS said that the military prosecution claimed that there were medical reports showing an improvement in the health condition of hunger striker Qawasmeh.

PPS lawyer Jawad Bolus held the Israeli prosecution fully responsible for the consequences of such step and called for referring to previous medical reports issued by the Israeli Kaplan Hospital which confirmed that Qawasmeh was facing possible death.

Qawasmeh has been in administrative detention with no trial or indictment since last January.

There are also five other prisoners who have been on hunger strike for different periods in protest at their detention administratively.

They are Kayed al-Fasfous Alaa al-Araj Hisham Abu Hawash Ayyad al-Harimi and Louay al-Ashqar. They have been on hunger strike for 113 89 79 43 and 26 days respectively.

Most of the hunger strikers especially Fasfous and Qawasmeh suffer from life-threatening health issues due to their protracted hunger strike.

In a related context the Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs has accused the Israeli prison service of medically neglecting Palestinian patients in its jails especially those in the Ramla prison infirmary.

According to the Commission there are 15 patients in the infirmary of the Ramla prison including hunger strikers Hisham Abu Hawash and Alaa al-Araj who suffers from serious health complications.

Most of these patients are only given different types of sedatives and painkillers to relieve their suffering and pains.
