Israel repeated assaults on the Al-Aqsa Mosque constitute a breach of Israel’s responsibilities as the occupying power in Jerusalem under international law and international humanitarian law the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Sunday. It held Israel responsible for attempts to change the de facto situation at the holy Islamic site and rejected such attempts.

“The international community must assume its responsibility and pressure Israel to put an end to its repeated assaults” the ministry spokesman Haitham Abu al-Fool said.

“Al-Aqsa Mosque with its total area of 144 dunums is a place of worship for Muslims only” Abu al-Fool underlined noting that the Jordan-run Jerusalem Awqaf and Aqsa Affairs Department is the sole authority to supervise its affairs and manage entries.

“The ministry is exerting strenuous efforts to de-escalate the situation particularly at the Al-Aqsa compound” he added.

Earlier in the morning Israeli police officers attacked Al-Aqsa Mosque and fired teargas bombs at Palestinian worshippers to evacuate the holy site and make way for Jewish settlers desecration tours.
