Mazari’ al-Nubani: Natural beauty and old history

One can smell the fragrance of flowers mixed with the smell of old stones while walking in the ancient alleys of Mazari’ al-Nubani village north of Ramallah. Here is a wall made of red stones that attract the visitors for example and there is a corridor made of rocks that add more beauty to the village.

Successive eras
Sitting in the open air recalling the old history Khalil Abdullah a resident of the village said that there are many archaeological sites in Mazari’ al-Nubani dating back to the Roman Byzantine Phoenician and Islamic eras. There is a prison established by the British oil wells ancient cemeteries and a mosque built during the Umari era.

According to Abdullah the village also has a Sufi house. The last of its men died in the eighties of the 20th century. It was called Kursi Bani Zaid and it has an old stone building with a huge dome placed on pillars in a unique design dating back to 1700. The building was recently restored to become a youth cultural club.

Picturesque scenery
As the PIC reporter was touring in the village’s alleys Mahmoud Amr one of the visitors talked about the beauty of old buildings in the village which makes them look like a well-painted piece of art. Amr said that the smell of Taboon bread can be smelled in every corner of the village though few people still make this kind of bread nowadays.

He added that walking in the village brings you back to the past because of the simplicity and kindness of its people and the beautiful details of its buildings.

Rich nature
Mazari’ al-Nubani is one of the villages of Bani Zaid area and it administratively belongs to Ramallah province. The village covers an area of 10600 dunums and most of its lands are planted with olive trees. In 2013 the population of Mazari’ al-Nubani reached 3600.

The village is also characterized by the fact that most of its lands are fertile and suitable for the cultivation of fruits that need regular irrigation such as citrus apple and pomegranate as it has more than 50 springs that cover all the residents’ needs of water.
