Monday 4-December-2006

Gaza – Senior Hamas political leader and member of the Movement’s political bureau Dr. Osama Al-Muzaini has unequivocally accused Fatah faction of deceiving the Palestinian people by saying that Hamas asked for the suspension of unity talks.

Muzaini was apparently responding to statements made by Saeb Erikat the PLO’s chief negotiator Sunday on the necessity to differentiate between two things namely the political pluralism and authority pluralism saying that Hamas was against political pluralism.

“Yes indeed Hamas is against political pluralism but the PA government is an authority with prerogatives and therefore the PA government shouldn’t be stripped of those authorities and vest it in the PA chief Mahmoud Abbas” Muzaini asserted.

He also explained “It was [PA chief information advisor] Nabil Amre who announced the failure of the unity talks few days ago before [head of Fatah parliamentary bloc in the PLC] MP Azzam Al-Ahmed followed up with similar “disappointing” statements and finally the adverse statements were enhanced by Abbas suspension of talks after meeting US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice”.

Furthermore Muzaini shrugged off Erikat’s allegation that “Unity government wasn’t for sharing but comes based on specified political program” and questioned “Why should he (Erikat) deny the term sharing? Isn’t it our right in accordance to the PA bylaw and international customs to get the lion share in the unity government being the winning and the biggest bloc in the PLC?”.

“If he (Erikat) knows not the political customs in such cases then we in Hamas know them very well” charged Muzaini.

The Hamas’ political leader moreover affirmed that his Movement isn’t worried of possible exploitation of the Palestinian street by those parties pointing out “The Palestinian people are monitoring the situation and know very well who strives to break the siege and who strives to tighten it around their necks”.

In the same context Muzaini seconded assertion of armed wings of the Palestinian resistance factions that the truce should cover the West Bank also and not be limited to Gaza Strip; otherwise his Movement will be free of it.
